2026 Mid-Season Report: Building on Our Vision

Halfway through the season, we're proud to be delivering on the vision we outlined in our preseason report. Record-breaking Team Canada representation, continued player development, and an increasingly competitive squad have made the first half of 2026 one of the strongest periods of growth in our Women's+ program.

Progress Towards Our Vision

At the halfway point, we're making progress toward a strong finish for 2026.

  • ✅ Record: 1 win, 1 loss, with one additional match postponed due to weather forecast.

  • ✅ Blues Debuts: 2 new Blues have made their home-and-away debut, adding to the 10 players who debuted during preseason, with several more players progressing towards their first game.

  • ✅ Team Canada Pathway: Record-breaking representation achieved, pending the official roster announcement.

While wins and losses are always important, our biggest success has been watching players grow in confidence, develop their skills, and contribute more each week. Every match has shown a more connected, resilient, and competitive Blues side.

A Pathway to Team Canada

The Blues have a proven track record of helping players progress from their first kick of the football all the way to representing Canada. This year will see the largest representation of Central Blues players ever selected to a single AFL Canada program, with athletes named to the Northern Lights National Team and Midnight Suns Development Squad preparing to face the United States in Kelowna, BC. For athletes with representative ambitions, the pathway is clear: our club can take you as far as you want to go.

As Team Canada is a pay-to-play program, athletes are responsible for covering their own travel and tournament expenses. Our fundraising campaign will help reduce those costs and ensure financial barriers don't stand in the way of representing Canada. Every donation, no matter the size, helps our athletes represent Canada and bring that experience, leadership, and knowledge back to the Central Blues.

Developing Our Squad

Developing players has always been at the heart of the Central Blues. The first half of the season has seen two more players make their Central Blues debut, with several more athletes continuing to build their confidence at training and preparing to take the field later this season.

We've also welcomed one veteran back out of retirement, bringing valuable leadership and experience to a developing squad. One of the strengths of the Central Blues is that once you're a Blue, you're always a Blue. Whether it's for a single match, a few training sessions, or a full season, former players are always welcome to return and help shape the next generation of Blues.Every debut strengthens not only this season's team, but the future of our club.

On-Field Progress

The season has continued to show steady growth in both performance and belief. Our opening match against the Cats on the road had a challenging start, but the Blues responded with two outstanding middle quarters that showcased our ability to adapt, maintain our structure, and get points on the board. Although the result didn't fall our way, it provided the confidence that carried into the following round.

That confidence translated into a statement performance against the Roos, where the Blues secured a massive victory. With eight Blues hitting the board and seven players rotating through the midfield, everyone contributed to the win. An outstanding final quarter reflected the resilience and belief that has been built through consistent effort at training. The win was a reflection of the work this group continues to put in every week.

We were then eager for a home rematch against the Cats. With a record number of players available, including two experienced veterans making their first appearances of the season, the squad was shaping up as our strongest yet. Unfortunately, poor air quality and thunderstorms in the forecast forced the match to be postponed, delaying what promised to be an exciting opportunity to test ourselves again with home-ground advantage.

Looking Ahead

Our first half was about building momentum. The second half is about turning that momentum into consistent performances. We begin with another meeting against the Roos, a side we won't underestimate despite our previous victory. From there, the Blues head to Ottawa to face the back-to-back champions, before returning home for our final regular season derby against our crosstown rivals.

Then many of our players will travel to Kelowna to represent AFL Canada against the United States before returning for the start of the finals campaign in the second week of September. If our postponed match against the Cats is rescheduled during this period, it will also provide another opportunity for the next generation of Blues to step up and showcase their development.

Thank You to Our Sponsors and Supporters

We're excited to see how this group finishes the season. Our goal remains the same as it was in preseason: continue improving every week and play our best football when it matters most.

A huge thank you to Portia Physio, Freya Athletic Therapy, Something in the Water Brewing Co., Nice Slice, Nadège Patisserie, Harmon's Craft Brewing, and City Shred. Your support helps make football more accessible, strengthens our club culture, and gives our athletes the resources they need to succeed.

As well, none of this would be possible without our players, coaches, volunteers, members, families, and supporters for your commitment throughout the first half of the season. Every training session, every game day, and every cheer from the sidelines helps build the culture that makes this club special.

With three playing opportunities still to come, a finals campaign on the horizon, and the largest Team Canada representation in club history, the best part of our 2026 story is still to be written.

Go Blues!
