AFL Ontario Round 9 – vs. High Park Demons

"Sean “Shorty” Goedheer kicked six goals for the Blues."

All three Blues teams played the High Park Demons this weekend and all three came away with emphatic wins. The ninth round resulted in the second trifecta in three weeks for the Blues, the first ever trifecta not including a forfeit and the third consecutive win for the women’s team.

The second division side played first and the Blues shot to an early half time lead of 38-3, but the Demons pushed hard in the second half and made the Blues earn their victory. The final score was 7.10.52 to 5.6.36. It was the last match for the reserves under the tyranny of Shane “Skinny” Hendrickson, who will be replaced by “Cool” Simon Swain for the final season game and victorious finals series. Kirsten Bodashefsky scored three goals for the Blues, Victor “Ocho” Cinco kicked two and Diarmuid “Dermo” Moroney and Chris “Swifty” Taylor kicked one each. Kenny Wong was back to his brilliant best, minus fitness and Catriona McCawley was once again a Top Contributor for the reserves men, despite the lack of a Y chromosome. Kirsten, Jen “Red Rocket™” Nicholls, Catriona and Ocho also polled well in the voting.

The first division side played next with the intention of bouncing back after a loss to the Dingoes, and bounce back they did. The match was an evenly fought battle in the first half, with the Blues going into the main break with a single point lead. Simon “Tickles” Harwood must have said something inspiring or threatening at half time, because the boys came out in the third quarter and kicked five goals to zero. The Blues finally took away the match 16.10.106 to 10.12.72. Sean “Shorty” Goedheer kicked six goals, Rob Guerra and Steve “Snorkel” Rutledge scored three each and Scott “Scoops” Shallow, Dermo, Riley “Vossy” Armstrong and Ty MacLellan kicked one each. Shorty, David “Fritzy” Whittington, Vossy, Dermo, Snorkel and Rob polled the most votes.

The Lady Blues were under pressure to keep the victories rolling for the day and for their first win not over a marsupial. The match was only played 12-a-side, but for some reason was still played on a full field. The Demons kept the Blues at bay for the first half, leading our ladies by a point going into half time. The full field became a factor though, as the benchless Demons ran out of steam and the Blues took advantage of extensive recruiting and a six player bench to win 6.3.39 to 4.4.28. Sherelle “Squizza” Kelly-Witt dominated up forward with two goals, while Charlotte Maruno kicked her first goal in the OAFL (and almost a second). Red Rocket™, Kirsten and Renee Tong all scored a goal each as well. Vera received the Best on Ground from Coach Rob, while Squizza and Kirsten received the Top Contributors. Catriona, Red Rocket™ and Charlotte were also voted highly. It was also the last match with the Blues for Dione Hodgson, who was carried off of the field and then drenched as the Lady Blues sang their song for the third time in as many weeks.

Round nine also marked the last game for Ewan “Obi” Williams, Snorkel, Vossy, Kirsten, Red Rocket™, Ash “Smashley” Grant and Renee before heading off to Australia to represent Canada in the International Cup. Blue Steel wishes them all the best of luck.

It was a fantastic weekend for the Blues, who now have a week off before playing the Toronto Eagles in the first division. With all three teams set to make a run at the finals, make sure you make it to as many training sessions as possible and learn the words to the club song.

Really, really, really, ridiculously good kicking.
Blue Steel.
