AFL Ontario Round 2 – vs. Toronto Rebels

"After a disappointing Round 1 loss to the Etobicoke Roos, the Lady Blues bounced back in a big way."

Two of the three Central Blues squads got their first victories in Round 2, as the Div. 2 Blues pounded the Toronto Rebels 64-7 (10.4, 0.7), and the Lady Blues beat the High Park Demons 61-21 (8.13, 3.3).

The Div. 1 Blues are still looking for their first win of the season, as they played shorthanded against the Toronto Rebels’ top side and lost 106-8 (1.2, 15.16)

There wasn’t really a moment where the Division 2 game was in doubt, as the Blues scored early and often and seemed to be the hungrier team on the pitch.  Simon Swain led the charge for the Blues with a hat-trick, and Dan Wills and Chris Taylor each added a pair of goals in the victory.

Two players from the Blues also recorded their first career OAFL goals in the win, as both Matt Donkers and Nicholas Barretta were each able to put up six points.  Donkers in particular was a menace on the field in his first match, and at one point won a 1-on-4 battle for possession against four different Rebels.  He earned best and fairest for the match for his thrilling debut performance.

The Div. 1 Blues faced off against the Rebels’ Div. 1 squad immediately after the preceding game ended, but a nonexistent bench forced Central to draw a number of players from the Div. 2 side into the second part of the doubleheader.  The Blues played with 18 men, and briefly lost Nick Pan to an injury that dropped them down to 17.  Tristan Zammicheli also played with an injury, and performed valiantly.

Diarmud Moroney played well and scored the lone goal for the Div. 1 Blues, but it was clear that the shorthanded club was naturally overmatched by the Rebels in this game.  Steve Rutledge, Dan Wills, and Ewan Williams also had tremendous games as well, despite the loss.

Despite the exhausting Division 1 game, a majority of the Blues’ men stuck around to watch the Lady Blues take down the Demons, in a game where Central really demonstrated their might.  After a disappointing Round 1 loss to the Etobicoke Roos, the Blues bounced back in a big way.

The most notable performance came from Miranda Voth, who buried two goals in the first half before switching to back and helping lock down the defense in the latter part of the game.  She had a hand in every part of the Blues’ victory.

Kirsten Bodashevsky and Sherelle Kelly-Witt each added a pair of goals as well, and Emiline Forster and Claire Thornhill also found their way onto the scoresheet with a goal each.

The Blues also benefited from great performances courtesy of veterans Ashley Grant and Katie Nestor, who had their fingerprints all over this victory despite not putting up any goals.
