AFL Ontario Finals 2 - vs. Ottawa Swans

The Blues men have made it into the 2014 AFL Ontario Grand Final! The women and second division sides were less successful but still finished off impressive seasons.

The second division side unfortunately went down to the Toronto Dingos 20.9.129 to 0.1.1 in the preliminary final.  It ended a fun season for the reserves side, which finished only one match short of the grand final.

The women went to Ottawa to play the Swanettes in another preliminary final, coming up just 15 points short in the wet conditions.  The ladies were fierce, although a few fifty-metre penalties against the Blues did some damage on the scoreboard. Inaccuracy also hurt the Blues ladies, but they have still shown a massive improvement, going from three years without a victory to one match away from the Grand Final!

Fresh from their trip down under, Ashley “Smashley” Grant and Kirsten Bodashefsky scored one goal each, while Kirsten was voted best on ground, followed by Smashley, Vera Santillana, Cat McCawley and Maeve Kehoe. The final score showed 5.3.33 to 2.6.18.

The men’s side were the success story of the weekend, also travelling to Ottawa, where they went harder at the ball and secured an important victory. All Blues played their part, manned up and had the Swans worrying more about the players than the ball. Steve “Snorkel” Rutledge, David “Fritzy” Whittington and Dan “D-train” Zimmerman were solid in defence and Paul Davis kicked two clutch goals in the second quarter.

Daniel “Chopper” McCullough also kicked two goals and singles went to Sean “Shorty” Goedheer, Victor “Ocho” Cinco, Brent “Biebs” Bogucki, Ty MacLellan and Diarmuid “Dairymaid” Moroney. Paul and Kyle “Doc Docherty polled best in the votes. In a match that the Phantom predicted a Swans win by 30 points, the Blues won 9.6.60 to 3.11.29.

The Blues are peaking at the right end of the season and will face the Broadview Hawks in the Grand Final! We are the Navy Blues, we’re the only team old Toronto knows, and we will smash the Hawks!

Really, really, really, ridiculously good-kicking.
